A Message from Director Jenny McMutrie

My name is Jenny McMutrie.  As a new member of the Board of Directors of Equality New Mexico, I am sending this to you today to tell you how excited I am about the work that our new Board and the staff of EQNM is doing.

We have for some time now had a laser-like focus on gaining marriage equality here in New Mexico.  Working closely with NCLR and the ACLU, our plan is strong and detailed and over the coming months, you will be hearing a lot more about it.

This is an issue that is very important to me personally.  In 2008 my partner Lee and I were married in San Francisco where we lived at the time.  We had been together for some 8 years and were so proud to be able to declare our love and solidarity as a couple in such a public but personal way.  The impact that came about from being married legally was a surprise to both of us and we found that there was a certain settling in our lives that took place immediately.  We had done what Gay and Lesbian couples had wanted to do for generations but had been denied that right.

While you may not be interested in marriage equality for yourself, let me assure you that just having the right to make the decision to either marry or not is profoundly life changing.

That is what we want to achieve in New Mexico for all members of the LGBT community and it is by no means impossible. Politically, there has never been a better time than now for our community.  Our President and the Democratic Party has just adopted marriage equality as part of their platform.  As you know, this is unprecedented and opens the door for so many changes to our daily lives.

We need your help now in our ongoing efforts to support and defend the right to marry.  I am asking you today to step up and help us to achieve our goals.

I am asking you for two things:

1)     Get out and vote to support our candidates who support marriage equality

2)     Please help us to move forward with by making a personal donation to EQNM so that we can continue to do the important work on behalf of your civil rights.

At EQNM, we know we can count on the LGBT community to keep up the good fight.

Thank you for all that you do to support our efforts and thank you in advance for your donation.
