Tonight, Equality New Mexico will host an LGBT Roundtable discussion with former Mayor of Albuquerque, and Democratic candidate for congress, Martin J. Chavez.
This is your opportunity to engage Mr. Chavez in a conversation about issues that matter most to the LGBT community, and families.
The Roundtable will take place from 7:00pm-8:00pm on Thursday, May 24th–at the Downtown Flying Star (Grande Room, upstairs).
Below is a statement provided by the Chavez campaign, outlining Mr. Chavez’ stance on key LGBT issues:
During my time as Mayor, Albuquerque made incredible strides toward equality.

We extended benefits to partners of city employees, included an AIDS memorial as part of the Bosque Restoration project, enacted a city gender identity anti-discrimination policy, passed the first hate crimes ordinance in New Mexico that included sexual orientation language, hosted Albuquerque’s first “Anti-Hate” summit and signed the first sexual orientation antidiscrimination executive order.
I’m proud to have been a leader on these issues before it was popular and have been picketed by conservative ministers for embracing the LGBT community.
In Congress, I will be strong advocate for marriage equality, fair adoption policies and strong federal laws that prohibit discrimination and battle hate crimes.
